Islamabad: President Mamnoon Hussain on Friday administered oath of office to Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
Earlier, the prime minister sent an advice to the president for the appointment of Justice Raza on the recommendation of the parliamentary committee on the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The ECP had been without a chief for the last 16 months. Justice Raza enjoys the consensus of all major political parties including the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) though it did not attend the meeting of the parliamentary panel which picked him up from a slot in from three nominees short-listed by the prime minister in consultation with the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah.
PTI chairman Imran Khan hailed the nomination of Sardar Raza describing him as a man of integrity and honesty. Imran has, however, objected to continuation of other four members of the ECP who were appointed prior to May 2013 elections saying they were chosen by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan People’s Party.
They are not impartial, Imran said.
Shah also joined Imran in demanding resignation of the four retired judges of high courts. Legal experts, however, say they can be removed only through references by the Judicial Council.
The 18th Amendment clipped the powers of the CEC renderingq him equal to the other four members of the commission where all decisions are taken with majority vote.
