In the town of Badoush, just outside the main northern city of Mosul, two car bombs at the residential compound for Badoush prison security guards killed two and wounded 16, police Major Khalid Jamal al-Din said.
“Two car bombs detonated today (Monday) at around 9:00 am (0600 GMT) in a residential compound for prison security guards in Badoush,” Din told AFP.
“Among the dead was Lieutenant Colonel Hussein Khalaf, the head of the prison’s emergency response team, and another civilian working in the prison.”
The explosions wounded 11 prison guards and five civilians, Din added.
On March 6, 2007, insurgents launched a major attack on the same jail, in Nineveh province north of Baghdad, and liberated 140 prisoners.
Meanwhile, in town of Qaim on the Syrian border some 340 kilometres (210 miles) west of Baghdad, two people were killed and five others wounded by two roadside bombs, including one in a market, Lieutenant Ali Shaker of Anbar province’s police said.
And in Baghdad, a policeman was killed and seven people were wounded, including three policemen, by two separate roadside bombs against police patrols in the centre and east of the capital, an interior ministry official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
