TEHERAN, Iran — An Iranian semiofficial news agency is reporting the country has sentenced a suspect to death on a charge of spying for Israel.
The report by Mehr news agency Sunday quoted Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi, Teheran’s chief prosecutor, as saying the identity of the suspect will be announced after approval of the verdict by Iran’s Supreme Court.
Neither the official nor the agency would elaborate. Israel had no immediate comment,
In 2008, Iran executed Ali Ashtari, an electronics salesman convicted of relaying information on the country’s nuclear program and other sensitive data to Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency.
Iran and Israel have been enemies since Iran’s Islamic revolution in 1979. Israel has been working for years to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program.
