Colombo — A young Indian couple was found dead under mysterious circumstances in their hotel room in Colombo on Thursday, prompting an immediate investigation by the police.

Initial investigations have revealed that the 30-year-old man and his 27-year-old wife had committed suicide by taking poison.

The police said that the couple had visited major tourist destinations in capital Colombo before retiring to their room on Wednesday night. When the duo did not respond to the hotel calls on Thursday, the hotel staff alerted the police.

When the police broke open the hotel door, they found the couple dead, with a soft-drink bottle laced with poison next to them, said the police.

However, police spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekara said the post-mortem examination had not fully revealed the cause of the death.

The police are reportedly in the process of sending samples of the victims’ bodies to the Government Analyst for toxicology examination.

Gunasekara said that the deceased Indian woman was pregnant at the time of her death.

The couple had been living in Malaysia where the husband had been employed.
