The Embassy of India Abu Dhabi announced, in the wake of the travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, that Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders will be granted extension time until December 31, 2020, to register for re-issuance of the privilege card.
With the OCI card, people of Indian origin can travel visa-free to India from anywhere in the world.
However, registration is required for OCI card to be re-issued each time a new passport is issued up to the age of 20, and once after the age of 50, the Embassy of India Abu Dhabi statement read.
But, "to avoid inconvenience to such OCI cardholders, it has now been decided to grant extension of time till December 31, 2020 to OCI cardholders to get their OCI cards re-issued", the Embassy of India Abu Dhabi said in the statement.
Furthermore, as and when the prohibition on international air travel is lifted by the Government of India and the status of OCI card as a lifelong visa for travel to/from India is restored, such OCI
cardholders would be allowed to travel on the strength of their existing OCI cards bearing their old passport number.
However, the OCI cardholder will have to carry their old and new passports, and the OCI card bearing the old passport number, every time they travel to India.
The OCI card gives people of Indian origin the privilege to travel visa-free to India besides almost all other privileges of an Indian national, except for the right to vote, government service and buying agricultural land.
