A heroic policeman, from India's Haryana, scribbled the vehicle number of the accused before being killed and this helped investigators trace the murderers.
According to NDTV, two on-duty policemen were bludgeoned to death in Haryana's Sonipat district last week after they questioned some men drinking alcohol in a car at night despite a curfew due to coronavirus.
The deceased cops - Special Police Officer (SPO) Kaptan Singh, 43, and Constable Ravinder Singh, 28, were found dead on the roadside in the wee hours of June 30.
Constable Ravinder Singh had written the vehicle's registration number on his palm before he was killed. This vital clue was noticed during his post-mortem, based on which the Haryana police was able to identify the six assailants.
Praising Constable Ravinder Singh for his bravery and prescient act, Haryana Police chief, Manoj Yadav said the deceased cop would be recommended for a posthumous police medal.
"It was basic policing skill that our brave Constable Ravinder Singh displayed before losing his life. He had scribbled the vehicle number on his hand which was noticed during the post-mortem," Yadav added.
