The Maharashtra government has asked the state's director-general of police (DGP) to take a fresh look at the lapse of the Raigad police in pursuing the murder case of Sheena Bora, following the discovery of her body in the district.
According to sources, the government is unhappy with the brief report produced by the former DGP, which did not recommend any action against police officers who had tried to hush up the murder case.
Pravin Dixit, the new DGP, has been asked to investigate the lapse and submit a report to the government at the earliest.
Sheena Bora, daughter of former top television executive Indrani Mukerjea, was allegedly murdered by her mother, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna, and Shyam Rai, Indrani's former driver. She was murdered in April 2012 and her body was dumped in a jungle in Raigad.
A few days later, local villagers complained to the police about foul smell emanating from the place. While the police recovered the body, they did not pursue any further investigations and even did not file a formal report. One of the officers in Raigad had tried to hush up the crime.
The murder case surfaced in August, when Rai - who was detained in another case - confessed to the police of his role in murdering Sheena and disposing her body. Within days, the police arrested Indrani, Sanjeev and Shyam.
However, as there were several loose ends in the case, and criticism of Mumbai police for not handling the probe well, the state government asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to take up the murder investigation.
On Thursday, the CBI arrested Peter Mukerjea and charged him with murder and criminal conspiracy. According to the investigative agency, Peter had played an active role in the killing of his step-daughter. - nithin@khaleejtimes.com
The CBI has also filed charges against Indrani, Sanjeev and Shyam, accusing them of criminal conspiracy to kidnap and murder Sheena. Other charges including destruction of evidence and forgery.
