The military says on its website Saturday that 85 other rebel targets were also hit with artillery fire in Friday’s assault.

It said all planes returned to their base safely and that work is under way to assess the damage and losses caused.

Turkey launched its latest cross-border offensive on Wednesday, hours after eight soldiers and a village guard were killed in an ambush near the Iraqi border.

Some 40 soldiers have been killed in attacks since July by rebels of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

The group is fighting for autonomy in southeast Turkey. Tens of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict since 1984.
