Trump lifts sanctions on Syria ahead of meeting with leader Ahmad Al Shara

US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday the lifting of sanctions on Syria, a move sought by the new leader whom he plans to see in Riyadh.

"I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness," Trump said to applause in a speech in Riyadh.

This announcement coincided with the arrival of Trump in the Kingdom.

Earlier, a white House official confirmed that Trump will meet Syria leader Ahmad Al Shara on Wednesday, May 14.

The trip marks the US president's first major visit abroad of his second term, with the White House saying he looked forward to a "historic return" to the region.

After arriving in Riyadh on Tuesday, Trump will make stops at Qatar and the UAE. Trump's itinerary includes Riyadh, Doha, and Abu Dhabi.
