Saudi Arabia has inaugurated the 'Ala Khutah' project, meant to simulate the historic journey taken by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Makkah to Madinah in the first year of the Islamic calendar.
The chairman of Saudi General Entertainment Authority (GEA), Turki Al Sheikh, said that the project "documents historic milestones" and "promotes deeper understanding of the Prophet’s life."
The 470 km route not only traces the historic journey, but will also provide visitors with immersive experiences, workshops and even event recreations using augmented reality, according to the GEA website.

The official Ala Khutah website says that the experience focuses "on the historical and spiritual aspects of the Hijrah." It will cover 41 historic landmarks, 59 "historical and enrichment stations" and 5 key event locations, according to GEA.
Of the 470 km, 305 km of the journey would be undertaken on foot. There are seven accommodations, over 112 restaurants and over 68 stores along the route as well.
The GEA chairman also said that the project’s first phase aims to welcome one million visitors, targeting five million by 2030, with potential expansion to 10 million, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
