An emmy award on the eve of your fortieth birthday and that too by knocking off a competitor who has been walking away with the award for seven years in a row.
Not too many people are likely to get a birthday gift of this proportion but then, Indian-born model Padma Lakshmi, has always had a lucky streak looking after her.
It was luck that saved her from a horrific car accident which left her with a broken hip and a seven-inch scar on her arm, when she was just 14. It was luck too that she was spotted by a model co-coordinator while she sat sipping coffee in a cafe and went on to become one of the most sought-after models in Paris and Milan. She might disagree now but it was also luck that brought her in contact with author Salman Rushdie who she married in 2004 and lived happily with, till 2007. In between, she became host of popular television reality show Top Chef, which got her the Emmy this week and also wrote two smart cook books around her love for healthy, tasty food.
Lakshmi's streak of luck continued unabated and in February this year, after years of struggling with endometriosis, a gynecological ailment that increases a woman's risk of infertility, she gave birth to a baby girl, Krishna Lakshmi. She has not announced the identity of the father of the child yet but then, with an Emmy and a baby, the celebrations have just about begun and she seems in no hurry to bring a man into the picture just yet.
Whoever said you can't bake your cake and eat it too?
