Kuwait has revoked citizenship of 1,291 individuals, pending referral to the cabinet, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior.

The Supreme Committee for Investigating Kuwaiti Citizenship met on Wednesday, May 14, chaired by Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al Sabah, the First Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Defence, and the Minister of Interior.

The cases were categorised as follows:

  • 9 individuals lost their citizenship certificates under Article (11) of the Kuwaiti Nationality Law No. (15) of 1959 and its amendments, due to dual nationality.

  • 113 cases involved the revocation of citizenship certificates under Article (21 bis A) for fraud, false statements, and forgery, including dependents who had acquired nationality by association.

  • 86 individuals had their citizenship revoked under Article (13), Paragraph (1) for fraud and false claims, also including dependents.

  • The largest group, 1,083 individuals, had their citizenship revoked under Article (13), Paragraph (4), on the grounds of serving the “higher national interest”, a category that includes individuals granted nationality for “distinguished services,” along with associated dependents.

Kuwait does not recognise dual nationality, and children with dual nationality have two years after the age of 18 to decide whether to retain Kuwaiti or keep their other nationality.

In recent years, the country has intensified efforts to amend the status of those residing illegally.

The committee emphasised its continued commitment to ensuring that Kuwaiti nationality is granted and maintained in accordance with the law and national interest.
