Kuwait: Official caught red-handed asking for bribe in anti-corruption crackdown

Authorities called on residents to report any similar incidents, stressing that Kuwaiti law exempts from punishment anyone who reports such crimes

A Kuwaiti official was caught red-handed asking for a bribe in exchange for his job duties and responsibilities, the country's Ministry of Interior said in a statement on Monday.
The official, who is the director of a cooperative society, was arrested following an official report submitted to relevant security bodies, it added.
Kuwaiti authorities filed a a legal warrant that permitted the documentation of the official's meetings and conversations.

"All details were recorded with audio and video, resulting in his arrest redhandedly. He was then referred to the competent authority to take the necessary legal action against him," the statement added.
The Ministry called on citizens and residents to promptly report any similar incidents, including demands for money or gifts by employees in exchange for performing their official duties.
It affirmed that Kuwaiti law exempts from punishment anyone who reports such crimes to the appropriate security authorities, whether before or after the offence occurs.
Calling it "a serious offence that undermines public trust in governmental institutions, the ministry confirmed its unwavering stance in taking all necessary measures to combat any misconduct related to corruption or breaches of public trust.
