Bahrain approved a phased pilot operation of a wireless emergency alert system aimed at strengthening public safety and civil protection, the Minister of Interior announced on Thursday, January 15.

The decision was taken at a Civil Defence Council meeting, where members reviewed the early warning project and discussed ways to improve emergency procedures, scenarios, government roles, and coordination between sectors, with a primary focus on national readiness and coordination among government agencies.

The wireless alert system provides the necessary information to citizens and residents before, during, and after emergencies. It a qualitative leap in the mechanisms for warning and communicating with the public during emergencies. It improves how the public is warned and keeps everyone informed within a record time period and effectively.

During its meeting, the Civil Defence Council reviewed all necessary procedures and implementation work in preparation for activating the service in the coming period, upon completion of the infrastructure and operational work.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, who chaired the council, said the system would be tested in stages and deployed initially in designated emergency zones once infrastructure and operational preparations are completed.

He noted that the alert system falls within the framework of government work and performance, and aims to adopt the best international practices in the field of civil protection and emergency management.

He added that developing early warning systems and ensuring that alerts reach every individual through multiple means comes within the framework of comprehensive community awareness programmes, providing updated data on risks, and facilitating the exchange of information between relevant parties.

Thursday’s meeting was attended by ministers responsible for foreign affairs, finance, transportation, municipalities, oil and environment, electricity and water, health, information, industry and commerce, and sustainable development.
