Police officer Afadul Mujtaba says the van was targeted Wednesday as the officers took the suspected rebel to a prison after his recent arrest.

Mujtaba says all five were hospitalized. The suspected rebel received critical head injuries.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack in Srinagar, the main city in the Indian portion of Kashmir.

Rebel groups have been fighting against Indian rule since 1989. They have largely been suppressed by Indian troops in recent years, and resistance is now principally expressed through street protests.

About 68,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
