The Home Ministry issued the notification of the extended tenure for the Rangers on the advice of the provincial government as the ongoing target killings and violence continue to haunt the hapless 18 million people of the country’s mega city.

Although Rangers have been deployed in Karachi for more than a decade, yet they too failed to eliminate militancy despite being given additional powers in the city where almost a dozen people are killed everyday.

Most of the political parties, except the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and its allies, have been demanding deployment of army to restore peace in Karachi which generates more than 65 per cent of the nation’s taxes.

Meanwhile, the Sind Assembly on Wednesday passed a unanimous resolution condemning the barbaric act of terrorism in Quetta and demanded the city to be put under army’s control.

The joint resolution was moved by Muttahida Qaumi Movement deputy parliamentary leader Faisal Sabzwari, Pakistan People’s Party lawmaker Mujadid Isran and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional leader Marvi Rashdi.

“Why are you opposing the army’s deployment and have made it a self esteem issue,” PML-F leader Jam Madad Ali asked the government.
