Gerald Ford recalls seeing a hand holding a large handgun before Secret Service agents seized Charles Manson disciple Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme outside the California statehouse in 1975.
The former president calmly recalls the attempted assassination in videotaped testimony released Monday by a federal court — 38 years later.
The president was shaking hands on a Sacramento street when Fromme pushed through the crowd, drew a pistol and pointed it at Ford. He was not hurt.
In the testimony posted by The Sacramento Bee (http://bit.ly/178GA1E ), Ford recalls seeing a “weathered” woman in a brightly coloured dress. He then saw a gun coming through the crowd but not who was holding it.
Fromme was sentenced under a law covering assaults on US presidents. She was released from prison in 2009.
