Dasti contested in 2008 and won with a big margin. He was unseated about a year ago on the charge of producing bogus degree at the time of election but won again in by-election with a bigger margin after a court allowed him to contest afresh.
An ordinary political worker with limited means, Dasti has been successfully competing feudal lords of the district.
He has also been a bitter critic of Rabbani Khar who belongs to the influential Khar family and shifted to the PPP in 2008.
On Sunday, Dasti came on a donkeycart to submit his nomination papers in Muzaffargarh while renouncing his allegiance to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for supporting Khar against him.
Besides his own constituency NA 177, Dasti also filed papers for the adjacent constituency NA 178 against the former foreign minister. He said that he would contest in general elections as independent candidate.
