Many of us will have attempted to swat a fly, but have you ever blown up part of your house while doing so? A  man in France has, BBC News has reported.

The man, who is in his 80s, was sitting down for dinner when he became annoyed by a fly buzzing around him.

He decided to pick up an electric fly swatter in a bid to kill the pesky insect.

However, at the same time, a gas canister was leaking in his home in Dordogne, south west France.

A reaction between his fly swatter and the gas caused an explosion, destroying the kitchen and partially damaging the roof of his home in Parcoul-Chenaud village.

French media have reported that the unnamed man was luckily not seriously injured and only suffered a burn on his hand.

The newspaper Sud-Ouest says the fate of the fly is unknown, while the man has moved to a campsite while his family repair his house.
