1 Indian among 12 killed in Russian strikes on Ukraine; embassy coordinating repatriation

Twelve people were killed and dozens injured in a wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday, September 1, with an Indian national among those killed.
“My condolences to everyone who has lost family and loved ones,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X.

The Embassy of India in Ukraine confirmed the death of the Indian national and said it was in contact with the bereaved family. "We are providing all possible assistance for early repatriation of the mortal remains. In this regard, the Embassy is in contact with his company and the Ukrainian authorities," it said on a post on social media platform X.

Kyiv, Odesa and other regions hit
Zelenskyy said Russian forces used a large number of drones and ballistic missiles in the overnight attacks, damaging residential buildings and civilian infrastructure across several parts of the country.
In Kyiv and the surrounding region, nearly 350 emergency workers were involved in clearing the aftermath. "A significant number of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles were used in the attack. Unfortunately, residential buildings and civilian infrastructure have been damaged. In Boryspil, an ordinary five-story residential building was damaged," Zelensky added.

"Fifty people were evacuated. All necessary services are on the ground. Businesses were also struck. Overall, 4 people were killed and 13 injured in the city. My condolences," he added.
The Ukrainian President noted that attacks also continued against Odesa and the surrounding region, leaving thousands of families without electricity. "A border crossing with Romania was deliberately damaged, as was export infrastructure. In Kyiv, a strike on a railway depot killed 7 people. The Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy, and Dnipro regions also came under attack."
Zelenskyy calls for stronger air defences
Zelenskyy accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians and said the scale of casualties depended heavily on Ukraine’s ability to intercept incoming attacks.
He thanked countries providing air defence support through the PURL initiative and bilateral assistance, saying increased deliveries would be particularly important in the coming months.
“The number of victims of Russian terror directly hinges on every new package of assistance,” he said. "I thank everyone who is helping make Ukraine more resilient."
Zelenskyy says Putin wants ‘more war’
Earlier, Zelenskyy accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of seeking to prolong the conflict, despite what he described as support among a majority of Russians for ending the war along the current line of contact.
“For now, unfortunately, all the intel — both ours and our partners' — and all the signals from Russia indicate that the Russian leader personally wants more war,” he said. "Even now, when the absolute majority of his own society would agree to stop the war along the line of contact."
Talks with Trump’s envoys
Zelenskyy also held talks on Monday, August 31, with US President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
The discussions included possible dates for Trump’s visit to Ukraine, while Zelenskyy briefed the US officials on developments on the battlefield.
He claimed Russia’s territorial gains had been limited and had come at the cost of heavy losses.
