Well-heeled owners of diamond processing units in Surat in south Gujarat have been offering cash as performance bonus to its dexterous artisans. But for the first time, a well-known diamond baron has gifted swanky cars to his 70 efficient workers for achieving targets set for them.
While Savji Dholakia gave away Chevrolet-Beats to the 70 diamond cutters and polishers, 30 other poorer workers who also met his production expectations were paid Rs300,000 in cold cash.
An Ahmedabad-based diamond merchant who knows Dholakia told Khaleej Times that some of the 70 car winners did not know driving, adding that cash was handed to those who wanted to repay home loans or buy jewellery for their family members.
The diamond industry in Surat processes 80% of the world’s rough stones and employs some 450,000 workers in 4,500 units.
