Club of democracy, a successful project held last year by the Hewar ‘Dialogue’ Society, might be re-organised if the board members list it in this summer activities.
President of the Society, Sayed Adnan Jalal, told Khaleej times on Tuesday that the club received a huge response last year and so it might be reintroduced to allow more youth to learn useful things about democracy. The club will also be responsible of evaluating the performance of elected councils, including the Chamber of Representatives.
“The club usually starts its activities with awareness and creative initiatives to associate youth in the young democratic process in Bahrain,” he said, adding: “The launching of the club might come at the right time, as Bahrain will witness by-election in September.”
Through the club, youth of the age group of 13 to 18 years are promoted to participate in elected councils such as student councils at universities and trade unions. Last year’s club was dedicated to push the government to reduce the voting age from 20 to 18 to allow the largest number of youth to participate in the decision-making exercise.
“We are promoting the political reforms of the kingdom that started in 2002 as well as positive citizenship. The club also focuses on gender equality in political empowerment, by backing women to become members in elected councils,” he explained.
