The statement was made on Tuesday during the Defence Secretary’s meeting with the Vice-Chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, Xu Qiliang, who said China is “ready to boost pragmatic cooperation in various fields with the Sri Lankan military,” Xinhua reported.

The Lankan Defence Secretary’s visit to China cements the military ties between the two countries following a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Sri Lanka earlier this month.

Despite repeated assertions by Sri Lankan officials that the Chinese president’s visit was based on commercial, rather than military and security reasons, president Jinping announced increased defence and maritime security cooperation with Sri Lanka during his visit.
