Candidates receive threats to boycott Bahrain by-polls

MANAMA — Some candidates taking part in the by-polls set for September 24 have received threats to withdraw from the electoral process.

Chief of Public Security Major-General Tariq Mubarak bin Daina confirmed on Tuesday that some candidates have received threats, while affirming security authorities would take their responsibilities to protect freedom and secure election.
He said that the safety of candidates and voters are protected by the law and those who don’t respect it will be held accountable and legal action would be taken against them.
Chief of Public Security called upon everybody to practice their political rights that are protected by the constitution and law through participation in election.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Election Committee has condemned incitement against the election that to be held on September 24 in 18 constituencies. It highlighted in a statement that threats and accusations of treason by some scholars during last Friday against those planning to take part in election as candidates and voters aren’t acceptableshamada@khaleejtimes.com
