Starting today, British nationals have the option to renew their passports for just one year, at no extra fees. The 12 months extension is only valid for Brits living oversees.

Similarly, if you are the parent or guardian of a child living overseas that needs to travel urgently, you can apply for an emergency travel document for your child instead of a new or renewed passport.

Details of the new service and applications can be found through the consular services of the British embassy in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. On Monday, though, no one was available to offer any details.

Applying for a full passport renewal from oversees is still possible using an online application form. Once received by the Passport Office in UK, the application will take at least six weeks.

Apart from current UK passport, applicants must submit the online application form, two new identical photos of the applicant and any other current passports issued by other countries.

The total cost for an adult standard 32-page passport is UK Pound 102.86 for both passport and courier fees, while the adult jumbo 48-page passport is UK Pound 110.86.

The application for passport renewal may be done nearly a year in advance. Up to nine months remaining on the existing passport will be added to the renewed one.

While applying for either a renewed passport or just a 12 months extension, the UK Passport Office advices not to book any oversees travel or apply for visas, as delay may occur.
