“There is a big question mark on whether nationalist groups of Balochistan will participate in the elections,” Senator Shahid Hassan Bugti of the Jamhoori Wattan Party (JWP) said in a newspaper interview.

“It does not matter whether nationalist politicians agree with the ideology and demands of the separatists. The fact is they have sympathies for those in the mountains,” said Bugti, whose party also boycotted the 2008 polls.

The nationalist parties stood a chance of sweeping the 2008 polls but stayed away in support of a federal movement for restoration of judges sacked by Gen. Pervez Musharraf in November 2007. The two mainstream parties the Pakistan People’s Party and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz took part in the polls. The PPP won seven seats in the 65-member Balochistan Assembly but formed government after Musharraf struck a deal with Asif Zardari and forced his handpicked PML-Q to withdraw from the contention despite winning 17 seats.

“Personally, I am disappointed by the way nationalist parties in parliament are being dealt with,” Bugti said, echoing the sentiments of other Baloch parliamentarians.
