The protesters even chased away scores of lovey-dovey couples gathered at the renovated riverfront by flinging rotten tomotoes on them.
The saffron brigade played spoilsport in Ahmedabad targeting young couples even as admirers of Narendra Modi danced to the tunes of Bollywood songs at a ‘We Love Modi’ musical concert to mark the Valentine’s Day during his visit to Vadodara on Friday.
About 30 frenetic volunteers of the Bajrang Dal, the militant youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, turned party poopers for youngsters by shouting slogans on college campuses opposing ‘public display of affection’ and making bonfire of Valentine cards on the picturesque banks of the Sabaramati river.
The protesters even chased away scores of lovey-dovey couples gathered at the renovated riverfront by flinging rotten tomotoes on them, leading to a scramble in which many left behind their vehicles while running for cover fearing more trouble at the beautiful prominade.
No complaint has been lodged with the police so far in connection with the incident. Bajrang Dal city president Jwalit Mehta later told journalists that there was nothing wrong in imbibing positive aspects of the western culture, the Dal was against obscenity in the name of westernisation.
Valentine’s Day is one such obscene celebration,” he said.
In Vadodara, 90km from Ahmedabad, where Modi inaugurated two state-of-the art urban projects—a sports complex and a state transport bus station, his supporters organised a ‘We Love Modi’ musical event at a stadium to mark the Valentine’s Day.
The group under the umbrella of ‘Mission Vibrant Bharat’ (MVB) gave roses and collect signatures of citizens of Gujarat’s cultural capital urging BJP’s prime ministerial candidate to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls from Vadodara.
Dr Suresh Patani, MVB president, said that youngsters danced to the tunes of romantic and patriotic songs eulogizing Modi,a dding that the group had distributed DVDs and CDs titled ‘Namo Namo Bharat’ to 100,000 BJP members free of cost.
