Manama — A court will decide on sentence for Bahrain’s opposition leader and General Secretary of Al Wefaq National Islamic Society Sheikh Salman next month.
Advocate General Wael Buallay has confirmed that the trial of Sheikh Salman resumed on Wednesday at the Higher Criminal Court.
The court set June 16 as the next date of hearing when the final verdict will be delivered. The defendant has been remanded into custody.
The case was referred to the court following the conclusion of investigations by the Public Prosecution which led to the defendant being charged with promoting political change using illegal forceful means and threats, in addition to inciting non-compliance with the law. The defendant was also charged with publicly inciting hatred, an act which had disturbed public peace in the kingdom.
The charges were levelled against the defendant in full accordance with Bahrain’s Penal Code following investigations into recordings of public speeches and sermons that promoted extremist views which constitute a clear violation of the law.
During the trial, the Public Prosecution reaffirmed the seriousness of the charges levelled against the defendant and requested that in accordance with the Kingdom’s penal code, the court issue the maximum penalty available.
The advocate-general confirmed that the defendant had been afforded full legal rights, and provided with the opportunity to meet his family and legal team throughout the trial.
The advocate-general said the court had heard from both prosecution and defence witnesses throughout the trial.
