Video: Indian nurse jumps over river to vaccinate infant in Himachal Pradesh

While some social media users praised her 'commendable efforts', others said that such acts should not be encouraged

Amid torrential rains in India, a 'heroic' act by a health worker has gone viral, with the internet showing mixed reactions.

The video shows the woman, identified as Kamla Devi, crossing a flooded stream in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi by jumping from one large rock to another to reach a village on the other side.

As roads were blocked by the floods and landslides, the woman braved the water swirling underneath her to reach Hurang village in order to vaccinate a baby.

While some social media users praised her "commendable efforts" and expressed their awe at her willingness to put "her life on the line for duty", others expressed that such acts should not be encouraged.

Some commented that "safety comes first" and nothing is "worth risking own life". Yet others called on the Indian government to provide better infrastructure to enhance safety in the area.

According to news outlet The Indian Express, Kamla Devi said she was rushing to reach a newborn. "The mother couldn’t come for immunisation because of the weather."

In Himachal Pradesh, the monsoon rains have led to the death of 303 people since June 20, with 155 attributed to rain-related deaths such as flash floods, drowning, lightning and cloudbursts, while 148 fatalities occurred in road accidents, ANI reported.
