Pakistan emphasised that its desire for peace should not be interpreted as weakness

Pakistan has issued a strong response to recent remarks made by the Indian Prime Minister, rejecting them as “provocative and inflammatory.”

In a statement released by the Foreign Office, Pakistan described the comments as a “dangerous escalation” that undermines ongoing international efforts to promote peace and stability in South Asia.

The statement accused India of spreading “misinformation” and pursuing “political opportunism,” while asserting that Pakistan remains committed to the ceasefire understanding reached in 2021. Pakistani officials credited the maintenance of the ceasefire to the involvement of several unnamed “friendly countries” that encouraged de-escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

The remarks from Islamabad came in the wake of increased tensions following a recent attack in Pahalgam, which Indian authorities have linked to Pakistan. Islamabad rejected these allegations, stating that no credible evidence has been presented, and accused New Delhi of exploiting the incident for political gain and to justify military actions.

According to the Pakistani government, Indian military actions in recent days have included strikes against Pakistani military targets. Islamabad claimed that these moves were unprovoked and could trigger “an uncontrollable escalatory spiral.” The statement further warned that such developments threaten strategic stability in the region and reflect “revisionist” tendencies.

Pakistan also criticised India’s response to civilian casualties allegedly caused by recent military operations, calling the framing of these incidents as part of a “new normal” unacceptable. It reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, emphasising national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

'Response calibrated and targeted'

On the military front, Pakistan stated that its own response was “calibrated and targeted,” focusing solely on Indian military installations. The government asserted that these actions demonstrated its defensive capabilities and restraint.

In addition to recent security concerns, Pakistan raised longstanding issues, including its objections to what it called India’s “disregard” for international agreements such as the Indus Waters Treaty. Islamabad said it would take all necessary steps to protect its rights under the treaty.

Pakistan also reiterated allegations that India sponsors terrorism within Pakistani territory, and pointed to its own record in the international fight against terrorism as evidence of its commitment to global security.

The statement reaffirmed Pakistan’s long-held position on the Kashmir dispute, calling for a peaceful resolution in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the will of the Kashmiri people. It also referenced past mediation efforts, including those led by former US President Donald Trump.

Pakistan emphasised that its desire for peace should not be interpreted as weakness. “Any future aggression,” the government warned, “will be met with full resolve.” Islamabad urged India to focus on regional stability and the welfare of its people, and called on the international community to monitor the situation closely.

As tensions persist, observers and analysts are watching closely to see whether diplomacy can prevail over confrontation in a region that remains one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints.
