India’s fastest metro system to boost real estate market

Commuters in and around Meerut in India’s Uttar Pradesh state heaved a sigh of relief as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s fastest metro train service between Meerut South and Modipuram and the Meerut Metro rail project linking the city to the national capital.

The 82-km-long Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor, which provides high-speed, high-frequency connectivity between Delhi and Meerut, is part of the country’s first regional rapid transit system (RRTS).

With a design speed of 180 km per hour, Namo Bharat is India’s first RRTS and will connect major urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar (it is named after a prominent industrialist, Gujarmal Modi, who established it in 1933) and Meerut with Delhi at a faster pace.

The Meerut Metro is India’s fastest metro system with a maximum operational speed of 120 km/h. It will cover the distance of 23km in 30 minutes.

The two projects are expected to boost the real estate market along the corridor. “Faster travel times to Delhi and other NCR centres are expected to reshape buyer preferences,” remarked Ankita Sood, national director, research, Knight Frank India. “For many homebuyers, shorter commutes outweigh higher property prices, making projects along the corridor increasingly attractive.”

Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta described the ‘Namo Bharat’ rapid rail corridor as a transformative project for the national capital, which would make a significant contribution to Delhi's overall development. It will help passengers save time and resources, and will ease traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions by reducing the number of private vehicles on the roads, she said.

The three-phase Namo Bharat corridor includes Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Panipat and Delhi-Alwar, all converging at the capital’s Sarai Kale Khan station. The Namo Bharat trains have six coaches and can accommodate 450 passengers. Namo Bharat is designed to carry 800,000 passengers a day at full capacity.
