India: New Delhi airport officials book case against man smuggling gold from Sharjah

The smuggled gold is valued at a total tariff value of Rs13,487,395 (around Dh578,182)

New Delhi authorities booked a case against Indian man for smuggling gold from Sharjah.

Customs officers at Terminal 3 Indira Gandhi International Airport caught the passenger based on profiling; he arrived on flight number G9-465 on July 3, authorities said.

Upon detailed examination of the baggage and personal search of the passenger, two while plastic pouches containing yellow coloured paste, suspected to be gold, were recovered.

After interrogation, a receiver of the smuggled gold was also intercepted. Two rectangular shaped gold bars and one uneven shaped bar, collectively weighing 1,484.5g was extracted out from the gold paste.

The smuggled gold is valued at a total tariff value of Rs13,487,395 (around Dh578,182).

Further investigation is ongoing to confirm the composition of the recovered substance and to assess violations under the Customs Act, 1962, officials said.
