Indian consulate in New York confirms death of national in Brooklyn shooting incident
The Consulate extended its condolences to Gurdeep Singh’s family and said it was in touch with them to provide all possible assistance

The Consulate General of India in New York on August 24 confirmed the death of Gurdeep Singh, an Indian national who was fatally shot in Brooklyn, New York.
"We are deeply saddened to learn about the untimely demise of Mr. Gurdeep Singh, an Indian national, who tragically lost his life in a shooting incident in Brooklyn, New York," the consulate said in a statement on X.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family during this difficult time,” it said, adding that the Consulate was in touch with the family and extending all possible assistance.

Singh was shot in the chest near Crescent Street and Stanley Avenue in East New York on Friday night, according to reports from Indian media. He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.
According to reports from India, Singh was from Kapurthala district in Punjab and worked as a pizza delivery worker. He was reportedly making a delivery around the time of the shooting.
The motive remains unclear. While some initial reports suggested a possible robbery, police sources told local media that investigators were also looking into whether the shooting may have followed a road-rage incident. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the motive.
Singh’s family has sought assistance in bringing his remains back to India and called for those responsible to be held accountable, according to reports from Indian media.
Gun violence reported accross New York
The shooting comes amid a series of gun violence incidents reported across New York in recent days, as authorities continue to investigate separate cases across the city.
On August 20, NBC New York reported that a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed in East New York, with police searching for two masked suspects. Officers responding to a 911 call found Ahmir Jordan with a gunshot wound to the head inside a business on New Lots Avenue. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said two men dressed in black and wearing blue surgical masks were seen fleeing the area. No arrests had been made at the time of the report.
However, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said on August 11 that shooting incidents and shooting victims in New York had fallen to historic lows during the first seven months of 2026. The department said it had seized 3,259 guns across the city since January, including 915 in Brooklyn.
"The NYPD has taken more than 3,000 guns off New York City streets so far this year, contributing to the fewest murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims in recorded history,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch.
