A California man gobbled 75 hotdogs to win the men's category, while the women's title for eating maximum hotdogs was grabbed by a Connecticut contestant who ate 48.5 of them in an annual hotdog eating contest.
The Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest is usually held outdoors on the beach at Coney Island, US, but this year due to the coronavirus pandemic it was held indoors in Brooklyn keeping social distancing in adherence.
The winner in the men's category, Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, grabbed the title for the 13th time when he ate 75 hot dogs in 10 minutes. While, Miki Sudo, from Connecticut, took the women's title by downing 48.5 hot dogs.
Speaking ahead of the competition on Saturday, Sudo, 35, said she was unsure how she would perform in an air-conditioned setting. "To be honest I'm a creature of habit, so having any unknown variables might throw me off," Sudo was quoted as saying in BBC
Terming the precautionary measures "super weird", Chestnut, 36, said, "One of the best things about this contest is the energy and the energy the audience brings. There's been years where I don't feel my best and the audience pushes me."
The contest is held every year on July 4, on the US Independence Day holiday, since Polish immigrant Nathan Handwerker opened his stand on Coney Island in 1916.
