Donald Trump met with Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh on Wednesday, a White House official said, a day after announcing he was lifting sanctions on the country.
Trump said Washington was exploring the possibility of normalising ties with Damascus, Reuters reported.
The official said the two leaders were meeting ahead of a larger gathering of Gulf Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia during Trump's tour of the region.


A White House spokesperson said Trump urged Syria's president Ahmed al-Sharaa on Wednesday to sign onto the Abraham accords with Israel.
On Tuesday, the US President announced the lifting of sanctions on Syria, a move sought by the new leader.

"I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness," Trump said to applause in a speech in Riyadh. The announcement received a standing ovation.
