A plucky police officer with a prosthetic is winning hearts online after a video went viral, showing him easily accomplishing the 50 push-up challenge in a friendly face-off with a gym trainer.
The incident took place in front of the National Palace Friday in Mexico City during a peaceful protest by gym trainers as the gyms have been closed since the Covid-19 lockdown was imposed. Several gym trainers engaged in some physical exercises as part of their demonstration, and persuaded police officers, present at the protest, to take-up fitness challenges.
One gym trainer shouts during the protest: "I want to see obese and inactive police officers doing these exercises. I want to see who is in charge of security and whether they are physically prepared!" That's when a young police officer with a prosthetic leg agrees for a friendly face-off.
In the video, the officer named Pablo Ramírez Lemus and the gym instructor are seen starting off at a good pace as they clap each other's hands between each push-up. But the gym trainer was seen struggling after 30 push-ups and was barely able to make 50 before giving up. While the police officer breezed through the challenge with 53 push-ups.
Officer Ramírez lost a leg in a motorcycle accident seven years ago and wears a prosthesis, and is a fitness coach for his squad. He works out regularly with colleagues and is preparing to compete as a rower in the Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, reported Mexico News Daily.
