In a stark contrast to US President Donald Trump’s prediction that the coronavirus pandemic will ‘end quickly’ and that things will bounce back to normal soon in America, the White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci has warned people that everyday life in the country may not return to normal until before 2022.

In an interview with the Journal of the American Medical Association, Fauci said he doesn't expect a Covid-19 vaccine to be ready until January 2021 or later. He added that the US should have worked to reduce the casualties, but have failed to do so.

"If we get the vaccination and start a large distribution campaign in the second or third quarter of 2021, I think it is easy at the end of that year or early 2022 for some semblance of normalcy to return," he said.

In an interview with the Journal of the American Medical Association, Fauci said that the United States was in a bad position after its failure to maintain low numbers of cases of the Covid-19 epidemic in the phase after the end of the summer.

He said that the authorities had failed to control the spread of the pandemic.

In a separate interview with Australia's University of Melbourne recently, the coronavirus expert said he was hopeful of a successful Covid vaccine being developed in the next few months.

"If we get a vaccination campaign, and by the second or third quarter of 2021 we have vaccinated a substantial proportion of the people, I think it will be easily by the end of 2021 — and perhaps even into the next year — before we start having some semblances of normality,” Fauci stated.

While President Trump has repeatedly stated that a Covid-19 vaccine would be available before the end of this year, the director of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in America, Robert Redfield, testified in a briefing before Congress that it is likely that the vaccine will not be available until the second or third quarter of 2021, according to Sky News Arabia.

If Dr Fauci and other experts are to be believed, it means that general or partial shutdowns will continue globally during the coming months, until a suitable vaccine is available.
