The quake struck at 1:34 am (1434 GMT Sunday) around 360 kilometres (220 miles) east of Port Vila, the capital of the Pacific island nation, with the epicentre 19 kilometres deep.

Vanuatu lies on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, a zone of frequent seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
