While four children and the attendant died on the spot, another child died in the hospital later. Police said four children and the driver of the van are under treatment. The condition of one child is reported to be critical.

The deceased children have been identified as Malavika, Ujwal, Arsha, Baiju and Jinan, all aged four, and the woman as Sindhu of Vattiyoorkkavu.

The accident occurred at around 9.15am, when the Omni Van carrying the children to Little Hearts Kindergarten at Pettah hit a stone while trying to give way to a bus and plunged into the deep part of the Parvathy Puthenaar canal near Chakka.

The side road from Chacka is very narrow and it is difficult for vehicles from two directions to move. The local residents said the driver of the Omni van could not control the vehicle as it was in over speed. As soon as the van plunged into the canal, the locals swung into action, pulled out the van from the canal quickly and rescued those inside the van including the driver. The timely intervention of the locals saved five lives. The driver of the van told reporters after he regained consciousness that there were nine children on board. Two kids were absent on this day which saved their life unexpectedly.- news@khaleejtimes.com
