The single-engine Piper Piper PA-32 crashed on Tuesday evening in a field in the Dortmund area.

Authorities told the dpa news agency it was on a return trip from Germany’s north coast and was only about 5km from its destination of an Arnsberg airfield when it crashed.

The 59-year-old pilot, a 72-year-old woman, her 15-year-old grandson, as well as her 34-year-old daughter and the daughter’s 5-year-old son, were all killed, police said. All were from the Arnsberg area.

Two of the daughters’ other children, aged seven and four, were found injured outside the plane, and her 16-month-old infant was pulled out of the wreckage. All three were being treated in a local hospital but no immediate details about their injuries were available.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
