His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s contribution of RO40 million takes the total amount allocated for the programme to RO80 million, with 4,800 houses built and distributed to the citizens annually over five years.

Shaikh Saif bin Mohammed Al Shabibi, Minister of Housing, said the royal gesture would “double housing assistance which will reach 4,800 cases annually, up from half that number, and reduce the period of time for expediting old applications registered with the ministry.”

He noted that the government’s social housing programme was specifically meant to provide citizens with good living standards. The scheme, he added, had benefited a significant number of nationals with limited income and social security families.

Shaikh Saif said the sultanate spent millions of rials annually to construct new houses and to repair existing ones under various ministry schemes, adding: “The royal grant has achieved a quantum jump in the programme and saves time of the applicants as the grant will cover applications submitted from 1990 to 2015.”
