As I enter a bustling Bebemos at Le Meridien Dubai, Garhoud, I brace myself for a prospect I don't usually look forward to - eating alone. Less than a week ago, I dined alone at a brunch, and the experience was more surreal. Not that I am not used to eating alone, it's just that it makes a whole lot of difference when you have gazes piercing through you, wondering why you're alone in the first place. At Bebemos, dining alone without attracting similar gazes initially seems impossible, that is until I observe that the diverse groups that have gathered at the restaurant are fairly engrossed in exchanging notes on life and cricket over some tapas and drinks. I park myself at a corner seat right at the entrance, which also offers a peek into the outdoor seating. But of course, there are fewer people outside due to the weather.

Bebemos is a cosy, little restaurant that is ideal for friendly gatherings like these. It only helps that food portions are humongous, and hence, shareable. I order some mushroom croquettas (stuffed mushrooms with cheese), which are absolute deal-clinchers. Things only get better with the black rice paella that arrives soon after. Finally, there is grilled seabass with asparagus and Romesco sauce, which is tender and flavourful. The food, ambience and service are impressive. I am definitely returning. next time, hopefully, with a partner-in-gluttony.
TASTE
The food is the star of the show. I loved the black rice paella with prawns. It came in a huge pot and can easily serve up to three people. I thought I didn't have an appetite for dessert, but still found myself relishing crema catalana with carquinyolis, a delicious take on creme brulee.
AMBIENCE
The ambience is ideal for small, private gatherings with friends and family. There is no overt pomp in terms of decor. I loved the simple, classic furniture in the restaurant. While the evening wasn't exactly quiet, the hustle and bustle adds to the allure of the place.
SERVICE
Absolutely top-notch. The servers were keen to take my feedback on the food. They were also quick to explain the speciality of each dish, while recommending them keeping my taste preferences in mind. They were prompt in serving as well as clearing the plates.
PRESENTATION
The presentation may not be eye-catching, but is fairly Instagrammable. I particularly loved the old world charm of the big cooking pot in which the paella was served. Was also impressed by the dash of colour added to the mains.
VALUE FOR MONEY
At Dh300-350 (cost for two), Bebemos is complete value for money. If you don't like the hustle bustle, feel free to sit outside (in the cooler months, of course) to enjoy a quiet dinner. If you love buzz, then Bebemos is sure to interest you.
