Which book(s) are you currently reading at the moment?
I am very eclectic when it comes to books. I have a passion for poetry and classic literature; so I often go back to reading a few pages of some of the books I read when I was in school. Usually, I read three to four books at the same time. At the moment, I'm reading Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. As an amateur mountain climber, I am fascinated by true stories of explorers and climbers who try to conquer mountains. Into Thin Air is a story of heroism and survival. My husband, who plays violin to unwind after a day's work, recommended Absolutely On Music by Haruki Murakami. The book is a conversation between two maestros of literature and music (acclaimed conductor Seiji Ozawa). It inspires you to explore new genres of music and, thanks to iTunes, you can listen to classical music performance referred to in the book while reading the comments on it from Murakami and Ozawa. I am re-reading Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 at the moment and asked my teenage children to do so as well. This story is usually seen as a protest against censorship, but Bradbury said his point was to draw attention to how television and other forms of media were making people less interested in the world of ideas.
What are the books that changed your life and shaped your outlook?
The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. As I discovered the famous quote, "All for one and one for all, united we stand, divided we fall", I also came to realise that friendship would become a very important part of my life. This book convinced me that it was alright to take risks and that one should not have to go through life being overly cautious.
Most memorable literary character, according to you?
Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. I have read the book multiple times and have always appreciated the human qualities of Valjean, despite the cynical world he lives in. The determination, courage and hard work he exemplifies are incredible qualities to possess. He values outcome over process. It tells us that with will, perseverance and introspection, every human being can improve.
A book you think is underrated and why.
François Garagnon's Jade and the Blessed Mysteries of Life is the story of an irresistible little girl, who is curious and spiritual. She helps us rediscover the true meaning of life in a very enthusiastic and poetic way. A very short philosophical novel, it is likely to leave you feeling optimistic and enthusiastic.
Your favourite literary quote?
"They did not know it was impossible, so they did it" - Mark Twain.
