Want to know something interesting? The logic behind the list SCHWA, SPLAT, THREE, GRIST, CHORE, FLOUR, SCEAU, FILCH, RINSE, GAMES, CANOE, REACH, MOIRE, BEAUX, QUEUE, ANGST, INTRO, ASTER, ACHOO, EXIST, AWAKE, ABOUT, ADIEU, EIGHT, OUTDO and OILED is that if you replace the consonants by '0' and the vowels by '1' you get a binary representation of the numbers one to twenty-six in ascending order. Isn't that cool?
But to slog on instead, now. There are many words that form another word when the initial letter is removed. The pairs of clues in this puzzle refer to such words. One clue defines the whole word; the other clue defines the word that is formed when the initial letter of the first word is removed. Either clue may come first in the pair. (Eg: if the clue is CORRECT/SHINING the answer would be B-RIGHT):
(1)SUFFER/PRISON; (2) ASSENTED/AVARICE; (3) IN GOOD TIME/ALMOST; (4) MOVEMENT/FEELING; (5) AFT/SEVERE; (6) MORE CERTAIN/MONEY-LENDER; (7) WITHOUT DIFFICULTY/SUGGEST; (8) DIFFICULTIES/FOREIGN CURRENCY; (9) ODD/ALIENATE; (10) TIDY/DINE.

DEAR MS

(The original problem was: "What's the smallest number which has to be added to 69241811 to make it a palindrome?" Then I added, what if the answer's 4. In that case, how does the solution work out? - MS)
Four-And-Aft Dept:
We write the digits 6, 9, 2, 4, 1, 8 and the number 11 of the last two digits of the given number in Roman numeric system and add Roman numeral for 4 at the end and we get VIIXIIIVIVIIIXIIV to make it a palindrome. - Abhay Prakash, abhayprakash@hotmail.com
(The other problem was: "Which number has three different primes as digits and at the same time is also a multiple of these three primes?" - MS)
Sub-Prime Dept:
The answer is 735. It is the only number that has three different prime numbers 7, 3 and 5 as its digits. It is also a multiple of these three numbers. 3 x 245 = 735; 5 x 147 = 735; 7 x 105 = 735.
The answer is 735. All three digits (7, 3 and 5) of this number are different primes and the number is also divisible by these individual digits.
(Among the first five who also got it correct are: Priyamvada Prasanna, ooehsclass11b@gmail.com; Sidharth Pampady, sidharthpampady@gmail.com; Priyamvada Vishwamitra, priyammysore@gmail.com; Ramesh S Mahalingam, ramesh@idealmc.com; Saifuddin S F Khomosi, saif_sfk@hotmail.com)
(The third puzzle was: "Why does more steam come out of a bucket of hot water when cold water is poured into it from a height?" - MS)
Lot-Of-Hot-Air Dept:
Hot water has hot air (steam or water vapour) on top of it, which is light. When cold water is poured on to it from a height, cold air takes the space occupied by the hot air earlier, as cold air is denser than hot air. So hot air (steam) rises, while cold air takes its place.
More steam is formed because it is evaporating into water vapour and then very quickly condensing due to the presence of cold water, as a cloud of visible steam.

ENDGAME(S)

  1. If the area and volume of a certain sphere are both four-digit integers times pi, what is the radius of the sphere?
  2. Each of the letter pairs OM, YN, ON, IV, OL, UB, EC except one, fits inside a 5-letter word. The same three letters, in order, complete each 5-letter word. For example, tUBes; so the others (except one) would need to fit inside "tes". Since the pairs have to be INSIDE, then each of the six words you're looking for will start with "t" and end with "s" (that's in this example only). Can you find the six 5-letter words?
