Holi means colours and camaraderie, bringing joy to those around. And that's precisely what Kinara, at JA Lake View Hotel, hopes to do with its Holi menu - bring joy to its diners. The special menu of traditional and modern Holi dishes on March 9 and 10 is truly a journey of the senses and an explosion of flavours, specially curated by Michelin star chef Vikas Khanna and his protégé in Dubai, Chef de Cuisine Ashish Kumar.

Things cannot go wrong when the chef is an authority on Indian cuisine, and the food at Kinara is proof.  The dishes are a nod to the timeless traditions of Holi and features authentic regional dishes with a modern twist, while at the same time highlighting classic ones with subtle smoky flavours and the variety of spices India is known for.

Starting with the refreshing Thandai of almond, fennel seeds and saffron, each dish is a delight. Starters such as Amritsari Macchi and Murgh Boti Kebab (for non-vegetarians), and Pyaz Kachouri and Dahi Vada (for the vegetarians), preceded the main course. Paneer Khurchan, Kurkuri Bhindi, Murgh Ka Salan and Bhuna Gosht, all  accompanied with generous sides of Kadhi Pakodi, steamed rice, Puran Poli and the house roti are any diner's delight. The sublime Gujjia and Kesari Malpua provide the right ending to a delightful meal.

The set menu is, in fact, a fitting tribute to the festival of Holi and the rich flavours India has come to be associated with.

Taste
The Amritsari Macchi (Vikas Khanna's take on fish fingers) and the Murgh Boti Kebab, with its delish green mango chutney, stand out. The chef's signature Dahi Vada with yoghurt and tamarind glaze needs special mention, as does the Kurkuri Bhindi; I never imagined a mushy okra could be made so crisp.
Ambience
Kinara offers a journey of the senses from the moment you arrival. Elegant spice displays adorn the entrance, welcoming guests with enticing aromas. An open kitchen creates a visual connection, while the magnificent outdoor terrace, which opens to the lake and lush golf course, provides the right ambience.
Service
Guests are made to feel comfortable with Chef Ashish and the restaurant manager Sukesh taking time to explain dishes. The servers ensure there is enough downtime after each course, so diners can enjoy the ambience along with the food. The staff's cordiality really stands out.
Presentation
The essence of Holi lies in traditional delicacies and, of course, the colours. The special set menu at Kinara is designed to make the table colourful with culinary craftsmanship. The dishes are made and served in a variety of colours, which are pleasing to the senses and a joy to indulge in.
Value for Money
The eatery, inspired by the beauty of home cooking, provides a rich experience of the cuisines of India and South Asia. For Dh220 per person, a set menu with so many dishes in such plush surroundings is truly value for money. You'd be paying for an experience and, there, Kinara wins hands down.
