Let’s be honest, with many of us staying in apartments, we are always looking for ways to make our spaces look bigger than it actually is. Don’t fret because there are many easily implementable design solutions that can immediately open up your space.

Here are some pretty simple ways to help you get started.

  • Stay light and bright

Pick shades of whites, soft tones of greys, greens and blues.

Darker shades usually tend to absorb light and make the rooms appear smaller.

Using soft shades can brighten up the space allowing natural light to filter in. Bright walls are more reflective and airy.

Keep in mind to select the right shades for your walls that complement your existing furniture.

If you’re thinking of refurbishing your sofas, arm chairs, etc, opt for soft fabrics in chiffon, linen or cotton. In comparison to chenille, heavy wool and dark velvets , soft fabrics work best to create lighter and air-ier spaces.

Who doesn’t love the idea of having aesthetically pleasing light sheer curtains!

  • Right furniture choice

Talking about the most important element that makes or breaks any space is the furniture itself.

Place larger furniture pieces along the walls and keep more open space at the centre to make the room look spacious.

There is no doubt that light tones of fabrics can help, but if you have compact spaces, it’s equally important to use sleek models of right size to fit in. Avoid choosing boxy and bulky furniture that’ll eat up most of your space, leaving you surprised after it’s already been purchased.

Sofas and arm chairs with open arms and exposed legs can be a good pick.

Nested coffee tables, foldable dining tables save space, allowing you to spread them out only when required and fold them back in.

Glass and mirror coffee table tops can do the trick in adding reflective surfaces and making the piece look lighter.

  • Mirror, mirror on the wall!

One cannot avoid having mirrors at home — the simplest and most effective way to make your space look visually larger.

This cannot work if the mirrors are not strategically placed. Hang a large mirror on the wall across your big window and see the space transform into a much larger space than expected.

Alternatively, you can opt for a series of small mirrors to be put up on the wall as art pieces.

  • Do not clutter. I repeat, do not clutter!

It’s very important to do away with unnecessary items that end up collecting dust and are barely used. Even a large space with lot of furniture can look small and cramped. Retain what is necessary and objects that serve their purpose both functionally and aesthetically.

Keep your room clean and organised, it will not only help you become more productive but also make the space more open and airy.

  • Minimise the use of large rugs

Using heavy rugs on the floor and, as a result, covering your reflective tiles is not a good option when you’re looking to make your room look bigger. Glossy floor tiles reflect more light.
