What book are you reading right now?
Elif Shafak's 40 Rules of Love - it's a simple statement, rather a declaration of profound truth. This astute work draws on the wisdom of the ages to provide an extraordinary wellspring of optimism and inspiration to anyone that thirsts for spiritual supervision in these troubled times. So far, it is redefining my love for Sufism. I cannot wait to finish it.
What are the books that changed your life and shaped your outlook?
To say that I never had the courage to pursue my dreams because I was scared of failure would not be wrong. On my sister's recommendation, I read Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist. The book is only about 210 pages, but every page offered more than I could think of. The journey of a boy in search of his dreams, despite a lack of resources, made me sit up and consider what I was missing. "And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." Fifteen famous words that will be mounted in my heart forever. Ask me who helped me to pursue my dreams - and Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist will be there too.
What books would you pass on to your kids to read and treasure?
I'd love to see a passion for reading in my kids, as I always saw my mother either read in her spare time or spare time to read! Once they reach the right age, The Alchemist will be the first book I give them.
Books that you never tire of re-reading, and why?
Fated to Love by Qaisra Shahraz, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini, and The Dowry Bride by Shobhan Bantwal - based on a woman's fight against her fate - are all books I can read again any time. The battle the protagonists fight within themselves and against their circumstances always gives me courage to face any hardship.
What does reading mean to you?
Reading is like cultivation. Every time I read a book, something inside grows, changing some perspectives, building parts of my personality, polishing rusted thoughts...
