What book(s) are you reading at the moment?
I am currently reading Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernières. It's an old romance novel set during World War II that my mum recommended to me, when I told her I'd never read it. There was even a film version released in 2001, starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz as leads! I work very hard during the day, so it's always nice to curl up with a good book at home - together with cake or pie! - as a way to escape, indulge and make time for myself.

Name one overrated and one underrated book.
When I first moved to the UAE, I was recommended the book A Diamond in the Desert by Jo Tatchell, as it promised to offer a background and eye-opening insights into experiences in the Middle East - and, specifically, Abu Dhabi. So, after settling down, I gave it a shot, thinking it would be a good read - but I found the book far too simple in content. It also didn't dish up any interesting information that I didn't already know.
I believe cookbooks, on the other hand, are highly underrated. With so many people using online resources to hunt for recipes these days, it's a shame not to use good old-fashioned printed cookbooks. Clinton St Baking Company, for instance, has one that offers the stories behind the dishes, along with the recipes - which come pretty handy when cooking for and entertaining guests.

Who is the most memorable literary character for you - and why?
Sherlock Holmes - he reminds me a lot of my childhood, so it's more of a nostalgic connection that I have with him. I grew up reading Arthur Conan Doyle's novels based on his best-known fictional character - and Sherlock has held a special place for me ever since.

Your favourite book quote, and what it means to you.
I don't really have a specific quote that's an all-time favourite, to be honest. I am a big fan of the Bronte sisters. I think coming from the north of England myself, I can relate to their boldness with some of their key characters' quotes. Jane Eyre, anyone
