Artsy Apps

Over the last couple of weeks, we've showcased quite a few functional apps to help you with everything - from packing for a trip to reminding you to drink enough water. But hey, summer is here, and if there ever was a time to let loose and goof off, it's now. This week, take some time out and unleash your artistic side with some good ol' creative artworks. Let these cool apps lead the way.

Sketchbook Express
The ultimate free doodle app out there, Sketchbook Express packs quite a punch with tons of useful features within a pretty user-friendly interface. Not only do you have the option of numerous tools and brushes, there are three layers that you can use, or merge, to create something unique. Doodle away on a blank canvas (or onto a picture from your gallery, for kicks) and put up your finished masterpiece directly onto deviantART, the largest online art gallery and community.

Flame Painter

Let's face it, drawing with a regular old pen or pencil is getting pretty clichéd, pretty fast. So for those pros who are up for the challenge, Flame Painter gives you the chance to experiment with unique brushes that bring out 'flame paintings'. The strokes appear exactly like fire, and you can mix colours and gradients to create something one-of-a-kind. 3D animator Peter Blaskovic, as part of his 'I Am Artist' project, created it; the project also includes a 'Fluid Painter' app, should you feel the need to play with virtual water, rather than virtual fire.

Graffiti Spray Can

Sketching and drawing are great, but if you're looking to add a little edge to your work, Graffiti Spray Can gives you the opportunity to draw on a virtual wall. It's almost like real graffiti, too - you get the satisfaction of shaking the can and firing away at the wall - minus the criminal element of defacing public property. There's also a great 'undo' option for those unfortunate spraying mistakes (whew!), and you can share the final product on 'Wall of Immortalz' - a graffiti spray can global community, as well as on Facebook and Twitter. All this, without having to inhale any nasty paint fumes.

Paper by FiftyThree

If you love your sketching, but there's too much on your mind, get creative with your to-do lists, plans and ideas with Paper by FiftyThree. The app creates notes, infographics, drawings, scrapbooks, or just about anything else that will spice up a boring-looking list. You can also share your colourful thoughts with your friends, family and coworkers. Great for creative minds that want to visualise their thoughts.
