How do you typically start your workday?
I wake up every day at 4.45am and make a cup of tea for my wife. Then I watch the international news on BBC. I shower/ shave and leave the house at 6.30am. In my opinion, that's the best time of the day, when I can get some peace and quiet before everyone starts to come in at 9am.

What is your favourite thing about your job?
The independence that it gives me to make decisions - right or wrong - which influence the performance of my company.

In your workday, what is the one thing you cannot do without?
My staff.

What advice would you give your younger self, if you could?
In life, you have good times and some not-so-good times. The key to success is survival, and learning not to make the same mistakes twice.

Who's your role model as the perfect professional, and why?
I wouldn't say he's my role model but the person I admire most is Alex Ferguson, the former manager of Manchester United. His determination and work ethic were incredible. The best example is when he brought in Eric Cantona, whose performance completely transformed the club and inspired his colleagues to improve their own work ethic and achieve personal ambitions, which they did not necessarily have before they met Eric and saw his dedication on a day-to-day basis.

What is one important skill you think every professional should have?
In my opinion, every person should have pride in themselves and aspire to become the best person they can be.

Your favourite indulgence when you need a break from work.
Spending time with my grandchildren. It is my ambition to help them live meaningful lives by being good people, respecting everybody as equals and striving to be good members of society.

Any insights or tips you can share on how to make the most of the workday?
In order to make the most of your workday, be organised and in control of your daily itinerary. Do not allow social media, emails etc to dominate your daily routine. Be in control of the delete button on your mobile phone!
How do you maintain a work-life balance?
By being organised. Next year, my wife and I will, hopefully, complete 50 years of married life. You have ups and downs but, in my experience, life is about compromise and being able to give and take.

Any advice for youngsters just getting into the professional arena?
Be a team player. We are not all equal but if you do have a particular talent then go for it, be positive, be confident and if you get the chance, then live your dream.
